Odoo Community or Enterprise?
What actually separates the two editions, what they cost, and when each one fits.
It comes up in almost every first conversation: “Isn’t the free version enough?” The honest answer: sometimes it is. But “free” is the worst possible yardstick for this decision. The two editions differ in price, in what they can do, and in who carries the risk.
The short answer
If accounting and bank reconciliation stay with your tax advisor and you customize little, Community is often enough. If you want bank statements read into Odoo and matched automatically, or you have no IT team of your own, Enterprise usually works out cheaper.
Community is not a demo mode
Everything from CRM through inventory and manufacturing to the web shop is included, for an unlimited number of users, with no license fee.
Enterprise mainly sells responsibility
Accounting, Studio, Helpdesk and Field Service come with it. What weighs more is that Odoo takes over support and version conversion.
The license is rarely the biggest line item
20 users cost €4,800 to €7,200 a year. Rebuilding what is missing often costs more, and it costs again at every version jump.
01 — License and cost
Two license models, two kinds of cost
Community
License: LGPLv3. No license fee, unlimited users, open source, running on your own or a partner’s infrastructure. You pay for hosting, setup and operations, not for the software.
Enterprise
License: Odoo Enterprise Edition License, proprietary. A subscription per internal user per month, all apps at one price. Portal users are free. Support, maintenance and version upgrades are part of the subscription.
| Odoo plans (Germany) | One App Free | Standard | Custom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per user / month (billed annually) | €0 | from €19.90 | from €29.90 |
| Apps | 1 app | all | all |
| Hosting | Odoo Online | Odoo Online | Online · Odoo.sh · on-premise |
| Odoo Studio · Multi-company · External API | – | – | ✓ |
List prices from odoo.com/pricing, excluding VAT, as of August 2026; billed monthly it is €24.90 and €37.40 respectively. Odoo adjusts prices and plan contents from time to time, so check the current pricing page before you quote.
In practice it almost always lands on Custom
On-premise or Odoo.sh, Odoo Studio, multi-company setups and the external API only start in the Custom plan. Because virtually every project needs its own infrastructure, customizations or API access, whether for connected shops and inventory systems or for AI access over MCP, we budget for Custom from the start. Standard looks cheaper in a quote and rarely holds up in practice.
02 — Features
What only Enterprise has
Finance
Accounting (general ledger, cost accounting, budgets, consolidation, localizations, reports) · bank synchronization, bank statement import (CAMT, MT940) and reconciliation models · invoice OCR · Payroll (not localized for Germany, so it stays with your payroll office or DATEV) · Documents · Spreadsheet with live data · Sign · ESG
Sales
Subscriptions · Rental · Amazon Connector
Supply chain
Barcode scanning in the warehouse · Shop Floor control in manufacturing with routings and scheduling · PLM · Quality
Services
Field Service · Helpdesk · Planning · Appointments · timesheet convenience (grid view, timer, validation)
Marketing
Marketing Automation · Social Marketing
Human resources
Appraisals · Employee Referral program
Productivity and AI
Knowledge · Approvals · VoIP · IoT · the AI features from version 19 onwards (AI fields and AI agents sit in the Enterprise code)
Customization
Odoo Studio, meaning fields, views, reports and automations without code (Custom plan only)
Operations
Mobile apps for Android and iOS · unlimited functional support · version upgrades performed by Odoo · hosting in the subscription · Odoo.sh with Git integration plus staging and development branches
What Community covers with no license cost
CRM · Sales · Invoicing including payments · Purchase · Inventory, multiple warehouses included · Manufacturing (MRP basics) · Maintenance · Projects · Timesheets · Website Builder · eCommerce · Blog, Forum, Live Chat, eLearning · Point of Sale · Employees, Time Off, Recruitment, Fleet · email and SMS marketing, Events, Surveys · internal chat, Calendar, To-do · Expenses · multi-company · German charts of accounts SKR03 and SKR04 · ZUGFeRD, XRechnung, Peppol
03 — Responsibility
The real difference
| Topic | Community | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Functional support | forum, partner, your own team, billed by the hour | unlimited from Odoo, included in the subscription |
| Moving to the next major version | entirely your own project; OpenUpgrade helps but often trails the official releases by whole versions | Odoo converts the standard database free of charge, testing and your own modules stay with the project |
| Accounting and compliance depth | through OCA modules (Odoo Community Association) and your own development, for DATEV export and reading in bank statements for instance | part of the standard and maintained by Odoo |
| Where the operating risk sits | with your company, or with your partner | mostly with Odoo |
Upgrades cost work in both editions
The upgrade service is part of the subscription, but by Odoo’s own SLA it covers only the technical conversion of standard modules and data. Not included: your own modules and third-party modules without a maintenance contract (Odoo counts Odoo partners here too), cleaning up legacy data, and training.
Testing happens in-house either way. On top of that, Odoo keeps changing the standard between major versions: in version 19 the mobile field on the contact is gone, leaving only phone. Anyone who worked with it has migration work to do, whichever edition they are on.
Our recommendation: on the standard with Enterprise, move to the new major version every year and each jump stays small. As soon as customizations are in play, every two to three years is more realistic.
04 — The numbers
Three years, 20 users, worked through
Example: 20 internal users, three years, own hosting wanted, so the Enterprise Custom plan. Ranges, not quotes.

Calculated at €175 to €190 per hour and one upgrade within three years. For scale on the rebuild: a reduced version of Helpdesk or Field Service runs 40 to 80 hours each, bank reconciliation 40 to 100. Hosting and rollout are left out.
The result: if you do not need the Enterprise apps, Community is cheaper. If you rebuild them, you end up above Enterprise and you stay there, because the same in-house build costs again at every version jump. It is not the license that decides, it is how much you customize.
05 — Decision
When each edition fits
Community fits when …
CRM, Sales, Inventory, Projects and Website cover your processes
accounting and bank reconciliation stay outside, with your tax advisor for example
development capacity is there for the long run, in-house or at your partner
data sovereignty and control over the code weigh more than convenience
you are building a pilot or one contained application
Enterprise fits when …
accounting is meant to run in Odoo: bank reconciliation, assets, reports
Helpdesk, Field Service, Planning or Barcode are part of the core business
departments should adapt things themselves, without a developer ticket (Studio)
there is no IT team and the upgrade path has to be guaranteed
people work mobile out in the field, with photos and offline
06 — Switching
Switching is possible, easier in one direction
Community → Enterprise
Uncritical. Same database, same core, the Enterprise modules are simply activated on top. Work only comes up where your own developments collide.
A path you can plan
Enterprise → Community
Technically possible, functionally painful. Everything built on Enterprise apps has to be replaced. The data stays, the processes do not.
Only as a project
If the direction is still open: build on the Community core and take on Enterprise dependencies deliberately rather than by accident.
Where we stand
We implement both editions and we host both. What we advise against: choosing Community to save the license fee and then rebuilding Enterprise features. In our experience that is the most expensive of the three routes.
Our integration product zSYNC runs on both editions, so the edition question does not decide how your surrounding systems get connected.
Not sure which edition fits your processes?
We look at the processes and tell you what is enough.
